Sciatica & Osteopathy

mod1Sciatica is pain in the lower back. The pain of sciatica is typically felt from the low back (lumbar area) to behind the thigh and radiating down below the knee. The symptoms are generally buttock pain and a sharp pain down the back of the thigh and sometimes into the calf. Occasionally, there may be numbness, muscular weakness and tingling in the leg.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and arises from nerve roots in the lumbar spinal cord in the low back and
extends through the buttock area down to the leg. The pain of sciatica is sometimes referred to as sciatic nerve pain and is produced by pressure onto the nerve which decreases its ability to function.

hp3What’s the News: If you’ve ever been told been that a massage is good for “releasing toxins”—or to sound more scientific, “lactic acid”—from your muscles, then you’ve been told wrong. Turns out muscle cells do like a good massage, but it has nothing to do with lactic acid.
In the first study on the cellular effects of massage post-exercise, researchers found that massage bolsters chemical signals reducing inflammation and promoting repair of muscle cells.
